Seven DC Extended Universe productions have a release date. The first one is Shazam!, which will be premiered at the beginning of April of this year.
The huge box office success of the Aquaman movie, which grossed more than $1 billion, has relaunched the Extended DC Universe, which didn’t had a very good debut thanks to Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad. If these two titles managed to gross some money, Justice League tanked at the box office and reviews were not very good.
However DC Comics has changed the strategy and focused on stand alone movies such as Aquaman or Wonder Woman. One example is the recently announced Aquaman spin-off The Trench, a movie that doesn’t have a release date yet but there are seven other DC Comics movies with established release dates and most of them are sequels and origin stories.
Shazam! gets premiered on April 5, 2019 and tells the story of Billy Batson ( played by Asher Angel ) who gets the ability of transforming into a grown superhero ( Zachary Levi ) when he uses the magic word “Shazam!”. The movie is directed by David Sandberg ( Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation ).
Joker, with Joaquin Phoenix in the leading role gets premiered on October 4. The movie is an origin story that will be different than regular DC Comics movies, as producers want to create a realistic and hard police drama, just like the ones put on the big screen by Martin Scorsese ( Taxi Driver, Ranging Bull, or The King of Comedy ). Martin Scorsese was even rumored – for a while – to be part of the production of the Joker movie who’s story takes place in Gotham in the 80’s. The director of the new Joker movie is Todd Phillips.
On February 7, 2020 we’re going to see Harley Quinn ( Margot Robbie ) in Birds of Pray alongside three other Gotham City heroes – Huntress ( Mary Elizabeth Winstead ), Black Canary ( Jurnee Smollett – Bell ) and Renee Montoya ( Rosie Perez ). Together they are ready to fight against Black Mask ( Ewan McGregor ) the leader of a criminal group.
Wonder Woman ( Gal Gadot ) continues her adventures on June 5, 2020, during the Cold War. The movie is called Wonder Woman 1984. Chris Pine resumes his role as Steve Trevor. Kristen Wiig will be the villain of the movie by playing the role of Cheetah. The first Wonder Woman movie, released in 2017, grossed $821 million internationally and it received some of the best reviews for a movie part of the Extended DC Universe.
A new The Batman movie, without Ben Affleck ( thank God! ) in the leading role has been scheduled for June 25, 2021. The director is Matt Reeves ( War for the planet of the Apes ). The producers want a younger Batman so the search is still on-going.
The second Suicide Squad also got a release date, which is August 6, 2021. The movie is being directed by former Guardians of the Galaxy director, James Gunn, who will also be in charge of the script. His intention is to focus on new characters besides Harley Quinn and Deadshot. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Idris Elba will play the role of Deadshot. The way the movie is approached by Gunn makes it more of a reboot than a sequel.
A new “get together” with Aquaman will only take place in 2022. The movie is scheduled for release in December 16, 2022. The producer of the movie, Peter Safran, made assurances that until that happens fans can watch The Trench.
