Telegram is starting to dismiss the old strategies and its old motto that claimed that “Telegram will be free forever, without ads and without subscriptions”.
So, this message that greets you when you open the app is no longer valid. The mobile version of Telegram will soon get new features that will only be available if you buy a “Premium” monthly subscription, which is in contradiction with what Telegram used to promise users. The next update will replace that message with a new one that will reveal all the new features.
It seems that “forever” has a different definition when it comes to technology. It should be replaced with something like ” until it’s no longer profitable”. It’s not exactly clear what Telegram Premium will offer but some leaks suggest that the premium version will bring some stickers and reactions that you can send in messages.
The new message you will see when opening the Telegram app says that Telegram offers free and unlimited cloud storage for chats and media, suggesting that we don’t have to pay for this service in the near future however, it has been proven the words such as “free” and “unlimited” have difference definitions in the technology world so we should not expect these services to be free forever. Things will likely change when the company will no longer afford to pay for servers.
Telegram has grown a lot in 2021 because of the WhatsApp scandal. Facebook wanted to allow data transfer between WhatsApp and Facebook, and this has caused users to react. As such, some users moved to Telegram, while others switched to Signal, a similar solution to Telegram but fully open source and encrypted.
