PlayStation rejects Microsoft’s offer for future Call of Duty games

-

The statement of Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft’s Xbox division, according to which he made a proposal to Sony to keep the Call of Duty series on the PlayStation “for a few more years” than the duration of the contract that the Japanese already have with Activision, has not gone unnoticed.

In a response to GamesIndustry.biz, Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan called Microsoft’s proposal “inappropriate in several ways.

” I had no intention of commenting on what I understood to be a private business discussion, but I feel the need to weigh in since Phil Spencer has made this a public matter. Microsoft has proposed that Call of Duty games will only be available on the PlayStation for three years after the current deal between Activision and Sony expires.

After nearly 20 years of Call of Duty on the PlayStation, we feel this proposal is inappropriate in many ways, as it does not take into account the impact such a move would have on our players. We want to ensure that PlayStation players continue to experience the highest quality Call of Duty, and Microsoft’s proposal undermines that principle.

Microsoft has reached an agreement to acquire publisher Activision Blizzard

This high-profile exchange of words followed the announcement that Microsoft has reached an agreement with Activision Blizzard to acquire the publisher for $68.7 billion. The acquisition is being reviewed by several national authorities.

The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority has already expressed concern about the possibility of Microsoft withholding Activision Blizzard titles from competing platforms or services (or offering them inferior versions of them).

Rumor has it that the current marketing deal between Sony and Activision, which was signed prior to Microsoft’s takeover bid, includes Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (expected to be released October 28, 2022) and the next two titles in the series.
