Overtime, the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, which was seriously damaged by the April 15 fire, was a source of inspiration for many artists and writers. The most notable example is the one of Victor Hugo, the author of the The Hunchback of Notre-Dame novel, novel that served as the inspiration for animation movie “The Hunchback of Notre-Dame” released by Disney in 1996.
Hugo’s novel gave a push to the restoration works in the middle of the 19th century, after the Notre Dame cathedral was almost destroyed during the French revolution. The Gothic cathedral, which later survived the two world wars, appeared in movies such as An American in Paris ( 1951 ), Charade, Bitter Moon, The AristoCats, Beauty and the Beast, The Three Musketeers, Hugo, Van Helsing, Before Sunset, Ratatouille and Midnight in Paris.
The Notre Dame cathedral, which is one of France’s biggest symbols, a landmark that attracts more than 12 million tourists every year, has been seriously affected by a fire that started on the evening of April 15, 2019.
The fire was put out thanks to the efforts of more than 400 firefighters who fought with the fire for approximately nine hours. There were no victims recorded, and the structure of the building was saved. The authorities managed to recover many valuable works of art and religious relics. The investigation into the cause of the fire is still on-going but it is guessed that the fire was started accidentally because of the restoration works that were taking place.
Many Hollywood celebrities posted messages on social networks expressing their surprise and sadness regarding the Notre Dame fire.
” I can’t believe what’s happening” Idris Elba wrote.
“It is very painful for me to see Notre Dame burning” Maisie Williams posted on social networks.
President of France, Emmanuel Macron promised that the Notre Dame cathedral is going to be repaired and he launched a national and international fund raiser in order to raise money needed for the repairs. According to media reports, so far billions of euros have been raised. Francois-Henri Pinault, the billionaire husband of actress Salma Hayek, who is part of one of the richest families in France, promised a donation of 100 million EUR for the reconstruction of Notre Dame.
