Guillermo del Toro’s new Pinocchio, much darker than the original story: What you see in the latest trailer

-

A new teaser trailer for Pinocchio was recently released, revealing a few details about what we will see in Guillermo del Toro’s latest film.

Del Toro is known to audiences for Pan’s Labyrinth and Hellboy, and his most recent film, Nightmare Alley, was nominated for Best Picture at the 2022 Academy Awards. The director is known for the unique colour scheme and visual aesthetics of his films, in which he often incorporates mythical creatures and horror elements.

Del Toro’s upcoming film Pinocchio, which he is writing the screenplay for and directing, is a stop-motion version of the classic. Made in collaboration with Netflix, the film is described as a darker version of the famous children’s story.

The cast of Pinocchio includes actors Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, Jon Turturro, Christoph Waltz, Tim Blake Nelson and Ron Pearlman.
The story of Pinocchio, seen from a different angle

A new trailer has been released for the highly anticipated film, showing us a darker version of Pinnochio than we might expect. We finally see Geppetto (David Bradley) alongside Pinocchio.

Interestingly, another Pinocchio adaptation will hit theatres this year, this time from Disney and Robert Zemeckis, and the latest trailer for Del Toro’s version makes it clear that the two films will be very different.

While Disney’s version seems to embrace the classic and much “softer” version of the story, del Toro’s Pinocchio seems to offer a more sombre interpretation that is more suitable for adults.

That said, del Toro’s version can of course be seen by slightly older children as there is no indication that there are any images unsuitable for minors, the only difference being the dynamics and overall sense of sadness.
