Global warming reveals toxic waste hidden by the U.S. army in Greenland

In the 50’s, during the Cold War, the U.S. military built many military bases in Greenland. They were supposed to house 600 medium range ballistic missiles loaded with nuclear warheads. The biggest base was Camp Century, which was abandoned in 1967.

Before they left, the army left tons of toxic waste hidden beneath the ice, including cancerous and radioactive waste.

The toxic waste was revealed after the ice melted thanks to global warming. The toxic waste has started to infiltrate in the area and they represent a real danger for the fauna and sea ecosystem.

Some of the toxic taste hidden under the ice includes thousands of liters of diesel fuel, polychlorinated biphenyls ( PCB ) and a small quantity of radioactive materials. Polychlorinated biphenyls are very dangerous because they are known to cause cancer.

This information has been presented in a study conducted by Jeff D. Colgan, associated political science and international studies professor at the Brown University.

One thing is for sure: this toxic waste might generate a huge international scandal.
