The boss of the Gambino crime family, Francesco “Frank” Cali’ was killed on Wednesday night in front of his home in New York, NYPD says in a statement.
Frank Cali, 53 years old, was shot six times in the chest at 21:20 local hours and, according to information, he was also hit by the truck used by the killers.
Cali was taken to the Staten Island hospital where he was declared dead.
The assassination took place in front of Cali’s home in Todt Hill, Staten Island.
The Gambino famil, one of the five New York crime families, is considered the biggest criminal organization in the United States focused on all types of criminal activity. It was one of the biggest crime families until the downfall that happened in the 90’s thanks to the authorities.
The assassination of Cali is the first assassination of a Mob moss in many years and the highest level in the Gambino family since John Gotti ( see details about the John Gotti movie ) ordered the killing of Paul Castellano in 1985.
John Gotti was arrested at the end of 1990 thanks to the collaboration of his right hand man, Salvatore Gravano, with the FBI. This collaboration has caused the downfall of many Mob mosses and caused the Gambino family to lose a lot of its power. John Gotti died in prison in 2002.
Frank Cali was born in New York in 1965 and he joined the ranks of the Mafia since he was a young man. His parents were Sicilian immigrants from Palermo.
Between 2008 and 2009 Cali served 10 months in prison for extortion and he took control of the Gambino crime family in 2015.
U.S. authorities considered Gambino part of the Cosa Nostra and New York ambassador of Mafia families from Sicily.
