21th Century Fox and its subsidiaries in movies and TV have been purchased by Disney. The transaction is worth $71.3 billion, although initial estimates were around the sum of $66 billion.
Now Disney controls franchises such as Alien, Predator, Planet of the Apes, Avatar, The Simpsons and also movie franchises that complete the Marvel universe such as X-Men and Fantastic Four. Disney now have access to popular characters such as Wolverine, Deadpool, Professor X, Storm, Jean Gray, Cable, The Silver Surfer and others.
The merger, which started to get media attention in November of 2017, will make Disney a more important player in the box office. So far Disney claims 30% of the United States box office and the number of will go up to 40% now that 21th Century Fox has been purchased. World wide, if we were to combine the revenue of Disney and Fox of last year it would total $10 billion.
Disney now also wants to make a stand on the media streaming market. The Disney+ platform , which is believed to be a hit, will be launched later this year. The purchase of Fox will also bring control of companies National Geographic and Hulu.
Precisely Disney purchased the 21th Century Fox production studios ( Twentieth Century Fox, Fox Searchlight Pictures and Fox 2000 Pictures ), Twentieth Century Fox television, FX Productions and Fox 21, FX Networks, National Geographic, regional networks such as Fox Sports, Fox Networks Group International, Star India and the Fox shares in Hulu, Sky plc, Tata Sky. Networks such as Fox Broadcasting, Fox News Channel, Fox Business Network, FS1, FS2 and Big Ten Network will be reunited into a new company called “New Fox”.
