AIM ( AOL Instant Messenger ), one of the oldest online chat platforms, shutdown on December 15, 2017.
The service, owned by AOL, was launched 20 years ago, back in 1997. From the information we have so far AIM is not going to be replaced by another instant messaging application.
The popularity of the AOL Instant Messenger has dropped rapidly after apps such as Facebook Messenger have gained more popularity. In June of 2017, the market share of the AOL Instant Messenger service was only 0.73%.
At its peak, AIM had tens of millions of users, mostly from the United States of America.
